Another random combo
I seem to have a knack for posting random things together in the same post. I should just do two posts, but o-well. I was going to say that I love filling up our cupboards with handmade things. And...We went to see the litter of puppies that we get to pick a dog from in a few weeks. They are two weeks old now, and very cute. And I never knew what strange noises small puppies make! They sound more like pigs than dogs!

Art workings
This is what Sarah has been working on in the studio lately. I just love it! I want to squeeze him, why are turtles so lovable? When he is finished he will be designed to hang on the wall, the clay "stilts" underneath are just support while she is working on him.

Garden bounty!
I love having a garden again! It's time for peas now, definitely one of my favorites! (if you're wondering, my boss made the bowl). I love how pea plants look with their little white flowers and twisty tendrils, I think some may be appearing on my pottery soon ( :
And our lettuce is out of control (or "spring greens" actually), i wish there was some way to preserve it! But alas, there is not, and so I give it away! I took this big bag to work with me today. Don't know why the picture is sideways, oh well.
Here you go: peas, corn, carrots, beans, greens! A deer chomped some of the corn when I wasn't looking, curse them! Time to get more "liquid fence". I can't spray it on anything we are eating, but I spray it around the perimeter and it seems to help. Sure does smell nasty!
On another note, I decorated this wall that has been empty for far too long. What do you think? Sometimes I'm not so hot with the decorating thing, so I need advice! Aside from the fact that we need to paint the walls and cover the hole in the floor! I've been thinking about a way to display my kangas from Africa for awhile now an I came up with this (actually, 6 of them and the one under the plant are from Africa, 1 from Honduras, 1 from the Keys, 1 a random piece of fabric, and the other a gift from I don't know where). Rob has been planning on building me something but unfortunately he does not have very much time for woodworking these days. So I used an old "iron" railing that used to be at the top of our stairs. I believe that is called "up-cycling" ( :

Whats going on in the studio...
Since I've opened an Etsy shop I thought I should start blogging about my art a little more. The best thing about Etsy so far is that it is motivating me to make more work! I need help with motivation anywhere I can get it! Well, the fact that Rob lost his job and it won't hurt for me to make a little extra cash is motivation too!!
My latest project is making interesting things from these not so interesting pieces of foam:

Another Birthday!
Today is Lentei's birthday, he is 10 years old today.
Lentei lives in Oloshaiki, Kenya which has a population of about 1,000 people, mostly Maasai.
This past Christmas Lentei spent his gift money on
a "very colorful suit", a packet of wheat flour, a kilogram of sugar, and tea leaves.
I will have to wait a few months to find out what he got for his birthday!
He likes living in Kenya, but says it is too hot!

you are what you eat
It's not very often that I get on a soap box. Its not that there isn't anything i'm passionate about. There are many things actually... my faith, the environment, child poverty and compassion international, to name a few. The main reason I avoid the box is that I have the worst memory retention of anyone I know. I have things I believe in and I have reasons for those beleifs, I just cannot recall many of the facts to support those reasons. Especially when I'm put on the spot. However, I am so enthusiastic about the following that I thought it was time to get on the box. I can hear the eyes rolling already ( :
So... I've had a steadily increasing interest over the last few years in organic food. I've always known our food was full of junk but for some reason I never really thought about it in depth until somewhat recently. But after a few years of reading and listening and thinking, I have become convinced that Americans are committing mass suicide through their mouths. Young people today are the first generation that will have a shorter life expectancy that their parents. After MSG, high fructose corn syrup, pesticides, hydrogenated oil, and the couch potato trend (and who knows what else!), what do we expect?
Anyway, I recently decided to make a real effort to go at least partially organic. It seemed a very daunting and possibly expensive task. I've been frequenting the natural foods section at Wegman's for snacks and some organic produce, but it wasn't much. Buying organic dairy or meat is ridiculously expensive so I was hesitating to go there. Then I was searching online one day and was thrilled to stumble upon Seven Bridges Farm. This is a local farm that sells all natural and grass fed beef and pork; wonderful stuff that isn't full of growth hormones, or mad cow, and the cows are happy up until the day they die ( : So I decided to go for it, dreading the cost. Lo and behold, for about $2.00 a pound our freezer is now full of steaks, sausages, loins, chops, tips, ground and every other cut you could imagine for less than we would have spent at the grocery store!
When you buy beef at the store it is coming from a feed lot (unless labeled grass fed). In all fairness I have never seen one myself, but from what I read they are quite disgusting. Animals packed in tight so they can hardly move, standing in piles of their own manure, given growth hormones, and fed concoctions of corn (which is not part of their natural diet) and remains of other cows. This diet is the beginning of many of the food "issues" we've been having over the last several years ie: mad cow, salmonella, etc. Yum yum.
So there is the humane issue, of course, and then the health issues. Growth hormones which lead to early onset puberty in children (and probably aren't good for the rest of us either), cows that are butchered for food no matter how sick they are (and then their unusable remains are put back into the feed of the cows that are still living), meat that has traveled many miles to the store, and then sits in the store until it is purchased, minimal testing for mad cow (Website on mad cow disease)...
Here's a piece that Fox news did on feed lots/grass fed cattle.

Whats been going on lately...
A lot has been going on lately and I haven't posted in awhile so I'll get right to it!
Two weekends ago when the weather was beautiful we spent 5 hours doing yard work. Lots of raking! I enjoy doing work like that and being out in the nice weather. I'm excited to see what kinds of things come up in the gardens here since this is our first spring in our house. I don't know my flowers very well, but I suspect I have some tulips coming up, and I know there are lots of irises, although those aren't really doing anything yet. There is also an abundance of those cute little white flowers that I love, I've heard them called Lily of the Valley although I'm not sure if that's their correct name. And someone told me I have crocuses coming up, whatever those are. We will also be ordering our vegetable garden seeds soon, can't wait!
Our friends from Montana were in town the past couple weeks so we were able to spend a little time with them, which is always too few and far between! They spent the night at out house (I love sleep overs!) and then we took them to the airport at 5:00 in the morning, whew!
Rob is on a climbing trip in Red Rocks Nevada this week, so I've planned to be away both weekends he is gone since I don't really know what to do with myself when he isn't here ( : This past weekend was a family weekend. I went down to visit my parents and Trevor was home from college on break, so I had some nice family time.
This coming weekend I am going home again, to see friends this time. Rachael is having a baby shower on Sunday, and we are having a girls slumber party Saturday night. I am soooo excited about that, I miss my girls, and having girl time!!! I don't get to hangout with my Rochester friends very often and girl time here is almost non-existent so this will be a treat!
My spring concert for community bad is coming up this week. I've enjoyed the pieces we are playing this semester. My favorites are Danny Boy and an arrangement that includes Baby Elephant Walk, Pink Panther, and Moon River. Our concerts are never great, but I really enjoy playing all the same!
And finally, in between all that I have been crafting a lot. Its been a long time since I've done very much crafting, but I've been on a marathon lately!
My friend showed me how to make rag rugs, this is my first attempt and its going pretty well so far. This isn't finished yet as you can see, I'll try and remember to put up a photo of the finished product.
I finally figured out something to do with all the fabric scraps I have. I've always been an awful sewer, so that wasn't really an option. The larger pieces will probably turn into more rugs, and the smaller pieces into cards! A funny side note on that, when I lived back at home my friend Rachael was my crafting buddy. Now we live too far away to do that anymore, but not a day after I started making these cards I received a card in the mail from her, and sure enough, it was made out of fabric ( : Crafty minds think alike.
This is another new thing I am trying, I call it paper cutting, i don't know it thats the official term. I cut sillouettes out of black paper and then glue them onto the white for a nice contrast. I think they will look good with a frame.
And of course, my pottery. I have a lot of stuff that needs to be glazed and need to get on that!
I have been considering putting my creations up on Etsy.com for sale. They seem pretty reasonable but I need to look into it more. I'll keep you posted on that.

We are home owners, yes we are
As you can see above, we had a little problem with flooding today. Our sump pump decided to stop working... Rob was able to get it working again (without getting electrocuted thankfully) but we thinks it may be time for a new one. All the water is now out of our basement and as far as we can tell no damage was done. And check out the boots... jealous? I am.

Houseguests
This is Belah (better known as puss). She is staying with us while my boss is in Florida for a few months. I thought it would be a good trial run to see if I want to get a cat, but I'm sorta hoping they will just let me keep her. She is such a good cat. She is extremely friendly and a little quirky. Cat owners will have to tell me if this is normal, but she likes to sleep on our bed under the blankets during the day, and she drools, mostly just when she is purring. And most importantly, if I want her to go away and leave me alone, she does.
And also, our amaryllis is blooming!

Books!
I like lists. Hence my decision to post a list of my favorite reads. I have two different types of favorites though: 1. the kind that is worth buying to add to my bookshelf, that I found meaningful in some way and that I will read over and over again throughout my lifetime, and 2. the kind of brainless reading that doesn't require any thought or concentration. I will only read these once and won't purchase them to own, but I enjoy them nonetheless. To be honest I do much more reading in category 2 than in 1, but category 2 isn't really worth sharing. And category 1 makes me look smarter anyway.
I wholeheartedly recommend these books to anyone, but not if you're looking for action, suspense, etc. These, for the most part, need to be digested slowly. Most are non-fiction, with a few fiction and children's books thrown in.

I'm no Cinderella
I am a slob. It has taken me 27 years to admit this to myself. I was always able to come up with an excuse before (who is neat in college?... My room is too small... My apartment is too small...), but now I've run out of them. I don't enjoy being a slob. It drives me nuts when my house is a mess. Really really crazy. But I can't seem to keep up with it. There are always dishes to wash and clothes to fold, and by the time I get that done the floor needs vacuumed or whatever. And then there is our vehicles... oh don't even go there. And lets not discuss my dresser drawers either. I supposes I could spend all of my much-too-scarce free time cleaning, and then things wouldn't be this way, but sorry, not willing to go there. When I look back at my day or week, I don't want to see that I spent it all cleaning! I think the better solution is to get a maid.

blood, sweat, and tears
I thought it might be about time to post something about my pottery. For anyone who doesn't know, I began pottery my senior year in college and continued on and off after graduation. Two (or so) years ago I started working for another potter who gave me free studio space. So now I "throw" (make pots) whenever I want. But here is the sad part of the story: I rarely find the time to make anything! When I do make time I get frustrated because I'm not getting any better, and I'm not getting any better because I never practice! Vicious cycle. So it seems that I finish 2 or 3 pots every 6 months or so..... but here are some pics of my "recent" work, recent being anything in the last 2 years! I'm still experimenting with my "look" but I get most of my inspiration from nature. Everything is wheel thrown if you're wondering.
One of the only vases I've made that I actually like. This was made in two pieces.
This is becoming one of my favorite glaze patterns. It is similar to picture of the planter at the end of my post.
Trees are another favorite.
Teapot - one of the most complicated forms I've attempted... lots of steps!
I like bowls. They have a lot of "glazable" surface area, it's almost like painting on canvas (not that I've ever done that!). They are also very useful!
One of the only vases I've made that I actually like. This was made in two pieces.

25 things
Well I haven't had any luck posting the rest of the videos from excel so I guess I'll have to move on to something else. I know I've been sadly delinquent with my posts. Here's something dumb but entertaining that I just did on facebook. I don't think many of you are facebookers so I decided to put it here too.
25 Random things about me..... feel free to respond with your own 25 random things bloggers!
1. I was embarrassed to do this but got so many notes from other people I decided it was OK.
2. I keep my TV in the closet.
3. My hair is really long, almost to my waist, and I need to cut it off before it strangles me in my sleep.
4. I miss the ocean.
5. I had chicken pox for the first time when I was 21.
6. I've never had a cavity or broken bone.
7. I am a potter. I make pots.
8. I love the outdoors and I feel like I am suffocating when I'm in the city.
9. I play the clarinet in the Victor Community Band.
10. With the exception of my underwear, nearly all my clothes are hand me downs from someone. Which is good because I don't like to shop.
11. I occasionally go rock climbing, and I hate it every time (I'm really bad and afraid of heights) but I always want to go again.
12. I have hippie tendencies, like wanting to eat all organic food (if I could afford it) and wearing natural deodorant, which doesn't really work.
13. I can't type without hitting buttons that make my cursor jump to a different place or the page suddenly scroll up and down.
14. I am madly in love with my husband whom I stalked at college to make him like me.
15. I'm really bad with numbers, I struggle with even the simplest math problems. I also have the hardest time remembering anything that has to do with a number (route numbers, phone numbers, my zip code...) and I often remember them backwards.
17. Everyone I know is having babies and I have no desire to catch up.
18. I think that immunizations do more harm than good.
19. I get really annoyed that it is so difficult to be healthy in our culture.
20. I love to run around in the rain (when its warm out).
21. I am still sad that Heath Ledger died.
22. I grew up on a grape farm and no we didn't stomp the grapes with out bare feet.
23. I want to go to Hawaii for my 10 year anniversary.
24. When I was little I didn't like Barbies or Cabbage Patch Dolls but loved playing with dinosaurs and trucks.

2. I keep my TV in the closet.
3. My hair is really long, almost to my waist, and I need to cut it off before it strangles me in my sleep.
4. I miss the ocean.
5. I had chicken pox for the first time when I was 21.
6. I've never had a cavity or broken bone.
7. I am a potter. I make pots.
8. I love the outdoors and I feel like I am suffocating when I'm in the city.
9. I play the clarinet in the Victor Community Band.
10. With the exception of my underwear, nearly all my clothes are hand me downs from someone. Which is good because I don't like to shop.
11. I occasionally go rock climbing, and I hate it every time (I'm really bad and afraid of heights) but I always want to go again.
12. I have hippie tendencies, like wanting to eat all organic food (if I could afford it) and wearing natural deodorant, which doesn't really work.
13. I can't type without hitting buttons that make my cursor jump to a different place or the page suddenly scroll up and down.
14. I am madly in love with my husband whom I stalked at college to make him like me.
15. I'm really bad with numbers, I struggle with even the simplest math problems. I also have the hardest time remembering anything that has to do with a number (route numbers, phone numbers, my zip code...) and I often remember them backwards.
17. Everyone I know is having babies and I have no desire to catch up.
18. I think that immunizations do more harm than good.
19. I get really annoyed that it is so difficult to be healthy in our culture.
20. I love to run around in the rain (when its warm out).
21. I am still sad that Heath Ledger died.
22. I grew up on a grape farm and no we didn't stomp the grapes with out bare feet.
23. I want to go to Hawaii for my 10 year anniversary.
24. When I was little I didn't like Barbies or Cabbage Patch Dolls but loved playing with dinosaurs and trucks.
25. My bedroom is 45 degrees.

Excel
We took the senior high kids to Excel this past weekend. Excel is a great youth conference held in Saratoga Springs every year. I had a blast with the girls. I have lots of pictures and videos but I'm having trouble getting the videos to upload so I will post what I have so far to pacify my mom ( : Hopefully I'll be able to put more up later.

Happy Anniversary
Thursday was our 4 year anniversary. Four very good years. To celebrate we went out to eat on Friday and then to "Cirque de la Symphonie". The Cirque was so good. Words can't describe, but this video gives you a little taste. I highly recommend it if you ever get the chance. Now I have officially added seeing the Cirque de Soleil to my list of things to do before I die. They are going to be in Toronto in the fall... hmmm....

Small Victories
After 4 years of marriage Rob and I are now able to use the same toothpaste. I have been loyal to Arm and Hammer for many years. Rob was a Crest kind of guy. One day we ran out of Crest. Oops. A few days later.... "You know, this baking soda stuff is growing on me..."
Its all in the minty fresh after taste. Trust me.
